Pet-Resistant vs. Standard Mesh: Which Screen Is Right for Your Home?

Not all window screen mesh is created equal. If you've ever had a cat claw through a screen or a dog push through a patio door screen, you already know this. But even if you don't have pets, the type of mesh you choose affects airflow, visibility, insect protection, and how long your screens last.

Here's a breakdown of the most common mesh types — and how to decide which one is right for your home.

Standard Fiberglass Mesh

This is the most common type of window screen mesh, and it's what most homes come with from the factory. It's lightweight, affordable, and does a solid job of keeping out common insects like flies and mosquitoes.

Best for: Homes without pets, budget-conscious replacements, standard window and door screens.
Drawback: Tears relatively easily under pressure — not ideal for pets or high-traffic areas.

Pet-Resistant Mesh

Pet-resistant mesh is made from a heavier-gauge vinyl-coated polyester. It's significantly stronger than standard fiberglass — typically 7 times more tear-resistant — and holds up to claws, paws, and the general enthusiasm of dogs and cats who like to lean on screens.

Best for: Homes with cats or dogs, patio door screens, any high-traffic screen location.
Drawback: Slightly less airflow than standard mesh due to the heavier weave. Costs a bit more upfront, but lasts significantly longer.

No-See-Um Mesh

No-See-Um mesh has a much finer weave than standard screen — small enough to block tiny insects like no-see-ums, gnats, and sand flies that standard mesh lets through. It's popular in areas near water or in homes that get a lot of small insect activity.

Best for: Homes near the coast, pools, or areas with heavy small-insect activity.
Drawback: Reduced airflow compared to standard mesh. Not necessary for most inland homes.

EMF-Reducing Specialty Mesh

A specialty option for homeowners who prefer to reduce electromagnetic frequency (RF) signal penetration through their windows. This mesh is made with a conductive metallic weave. Certain specialty metallic meshes may be designed to reduce electromagnetic-frequency transmission; however, product performance varies by material, installation, frequency, and environmental conditions. MeshMan Mobile carries this product for customers who specifically request it — ask us for available product specifications.

Best for: Customers with specific preferences regarding RF signal reduction.
Note: This product is not a medical device and no health claims are made or implied. Higher cost; not necessary for most applications.

Which Mesh Should You Choose?

For most OC and LA County homeowners, the choice comes down to two options: standard mesh if you don't have pets and want the most affordable option, or pet-resistant mesh if you have animals or want a longer-lasting screen that holds up to daily wear.

Not sure what's right for your home? MeshMan Mobile will assess your screens on-site and recommend the best mesh type for your situation — no guesswork required.
